One Man. One Truck. M6 Sorted.

Broken Down on the M6? I'll Be There Fast.

I'm Simon — based right at M6 Junction 25 in Wigan. From here I cover the M6 corridor across the North West, 24/7. From the smart-motorway stretches near Knutsford up to Lancaster, I know the slip roads, the laybys, and the spots where it actually makes sense to wait for recovery. No call-out fee. No membership. No call centre. Just ring me direct and I'll give you an honest ETA before I set off.

M6 Recovery, Direct From Junction 25

I live and work at WN5 — about a mile from the M6 Junction 25 on-slip. That puts me on the motorway in three minutes flat. For drivers searching motorway recovery near me on the M6 between Warrington and Preston, I'm one of the closest one-man operators you'll find.

The M6 isn't one road — it's eight different driving experiences depending on where you are. The smart-motorway section between J16 and J19 behaves differently to the wider three-lane stretch through J24-J27, which is different again from the narrow J28-J32 segment up to Preston. I cover all of it, and I plan my route to you based on which segment you're stuck on.

I'm also fully insured for hard-shoulder and live-lane recovery, kitted out with chapter-8 chevrons, amber beacons, cones and high-visibility signage. I follow National Highways protocols and only approach a live-lane breakdown once the relevant lane is closed by the gantry signs.

Junction-by-Junction M6 Coverage

Every junction I work has its own quirks — laybys, slip-road geometry, accident black-spots. Here's where I cover, and what I know about each spot from years of attending callouts there.

J19-J22 · Cheshire

Knutsford to Warrington

The smart-motorway section. No hard shoulder for big stretches — emergency refuge areas are about a mile apart. If you can reach one, do; if not, stay in the vehicle and call 999 first, then me. Knutsford services (J18-19) is the nearest safe pull-off if you can limp.

J23-J24 · Haydock

Newton-le-Willows & Ashton

J23 (Haydock) and J24 (Ashton-in-Makerfield) are my doorstep. Tyre blowouts on the steep approach to J24 are a regular call. I cover this stretch in under 15 minutes. Also useful: my Ashton-in-Makerfield page.

J25-J27 · Wigan

Wigan, Orrell & Standish

This is my home stretch. Three minutes from base. J26 has a tight bend on the southbound on-slip where I see a lot of overheating in summer. J27 (Standish) services — the southbound hard shoulder there is wide and well-lit, a good place to wait.

J28-J29 · Leyland

Leyland to Bamber Bridge

The road narrows here and traffic stacks at peak times. Engine overheating in stationary traffic is the call I get most often. Charnock Richard services (between J27 and J28) is a usable refuge in either direction.

J30-J32 · Preston

Walton Summit to Broughton

Around 35-45 minutes from my base depending on the time of day. I still cover it — and I'll give you a properly accurate ETA on the phone, not a fake "20 minutes" promise.

Services

Services on the M6 Corridor

Knutsford (J18-19), Charnock Richard (J27-28), Lancaster Forton (J32-33). All three are usable safe-stops if you can reach them. Don't risk limping past them if there's any chance of further damage.

Stuck on the M6 — What To Do First

Before you call me, get safe. Recovery only matters if you're still here when I arrive. Here's what I tell every customer when I pick up the phone:

If you can still drive the vehicle

  1. Indicate left, move to the hard shoulder or the next emergency refuge area (orange-surfaced, signposted).
  2. Hazard lights on. Pull as far left as possible. Wheels turned slightly toward the verge.
  3. Exit on the passenger side. Get behind the safety barrier with anyone else in the vehicle.
  4. Call 07549 676 220 — I'll give you an honest ETA before I leave.

If you can't move the vehicle (live lane breakdown)

  1. Stay belted in. Hazards on. Don't get out — passing traffic is the bigger risk than your stationary car.
  2. Call 999 first. Tell them your location (junction marker post number if you can see one).
  3. National Highways will close the lane via gantry signs. Then call me.

  4. I arrive and secure the scene — chapter-8 chevrons, beacons, traffic management. I assess the breakdown.

What I Do for M6 Drivers

Hard Shoulder Recovery

Fully insured for hard-shoulder work, with chapter-8 chevrons and amber beacons. I get on, get the vehicle loaded, and get off the motorway safely.

Smart Motorway Live-Lane

The J16-J19 stretch has no hard shoulder. I co-ordinate with National Highways traffic officers and only enter once the lane is closed by gantry signs.

Tyre Blowouts & Punctures

I carry common sizes on the truck. If your blowout is roadside-fixable, you're back on the road without a tow. Mobile tyre fitting →

Overheating & Cooling

The most common M6 callout I get, especially in J24-J28 stationary traffic. Coolant top-up, hose check, or recovery — depending on what's failed.

Battery & Jump Starts

Won't restart at services? I'll come to the services car park and jump-start you, then test the battery before you go any further. Battery service →

Accident Recovery

Working with police and National Highways to clear collision scenes safely. Cars, vans, light commercials. Accident recovery →

Wrong-Fuel & Out-of-Fuel

Don't try to limp to the next services. I'll recover you to a safe place and arrange the right fix.

Vans & Light Commercials

Transit, Sprinter, Vito, Crafter — my flatbed handles them. I know how much an off-road work van costs you per hour. Van recovery →

M6 Breakdown Recovery — Frequently Asked Questions

How fast can you reach an M6 breakdown?

I'm based at Junction 25 (Wigan). For breakdowns between J23 and J28 I can usually be on scene in 15-25 minutes, traffic permitting. For J19-J22 or J29-J32 it's typically 30-45 minutes. I'll always give you an honest ETA on the phone before I set off.

Are you allowed to recover on smart motorway sections of the M6?

Yes. I'm fully insured for motorway recovery including the smart-motorway sections of the M6 between J16 and J19. On a live-lane breakdown I'll co-ordinate with National Highways traffic officers and only approach once the lane is closed and signed. Your safety comes first.

Do you charge a call-out fee for M6 recovery?

No call-out fee. I quote a fixed price on the phone before I set off, based on your location and where you need to go. No membership, no surprises, no charges for the truck just turning up.

What should I do while I wait for you on the M6 hard shoulder?

Pull as far left as you can, switch on hazard lights, exit on the passenger side and wait behind the safety barrier — never stay in the vehicle on a live motorway. On a smart-motorway section with no hard shoulder, stay belted in your vehicle, hazards on, and call 999. Then call me on 07549 676 220 and I'll guide you through it.
